    Award for sustainable catering: fairgourmet wins Meeting Experts Green Award

    The Leipziger Messe subsidiary impresses with a high standard of quality and business responsibility

    Sustainability is rewarded: fairgourmet GmbH takes the top spot at the Meeting Experts Green Award 2017 in the Sustainable Company category. According to the jury: “fairgourmet GmbH’s considerable commitment to the issue of sustainability and component certification for organic goods is a model to others. With its request to adapt the sustainability measures successfully tested by the company into best practices, fairgourmet GmbH is committed to spreading the concept of sustainability management in the entire industry.”

    “At fairgourmet, sustainable management and action form the basis for high-quality products and first-class services,” says Managing Director Detlef Knaack. “Therefore we are very pleased with this award and recognition of our engagement. It is a great confirmation of our corporate philosophy, and the best motivation for continuing to develop concrete contents and measures to address the rather abstract notion of sustainability in the food service sector.”

    As a subsidiary of Leipziger Messe, fairgourmet manages all events on the exhibition grounds, at the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) and the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig. Added to these are numerous cultural and society events in Leipzig and the region every year. For its sustainable food services approach at trade fairs, conventions and events, fairgourmet repeatedly receives positive comments from organisers, as sustainability aspects are starting to play a more significant role in the event business.

    From regional purchasing to social responsibility

    At fairgourmet, sustainability plays a role along the entire value chain - from purchasing, logistics and storage to quality assurance and resource-friendly recycling. Also included are aspects of social and ecological responsibility, and communication measures.

    Specifically: In terms of purchasing, fairgourmet relies on regional producers and providers, organic products and fair trade. Preference is given to the use of re-usable dishes. Bio-degradable dishes are used if that is not possible for logistics reason. Milk dispensers replace individual pods on the coffee counters; the use of aluminium is generally omitted in all areas. fairgourmet also offers demanding apprentice projects and further training for employees on the issue of sustainability, and also supports charitable projects in the region. In addition to selling its own home-made gourmet food on-line, fairgourmet has also established the first platform for marketing high-quality products from regional providers with its own on-line shop.

    As the highest-performing caterer in central Germany, fairgourmet is also continuously engaged in numerous networks. For example, Detlef Knaack has been active in Leipzig’s DEHOGA regional association for many years, becoming its chairman in the autumn of 2016.

    About the Meeting Experts Green Award

    The Meeting Experts Green Awards was awarded for the third time on the evening of 13 February 2017 at the greenmeetings und events conference in Waiblingen on the initiative of the GCB German Convention Bureau e.V. and the Europäischer Verband der Veranstaltungs-Centren e.V. (EVVC). The awards honour the commitment of the event industry to sustainability, and were awarded by an independent jury in the categories Energy Management/Resource Conservation, Sustainable Events, Sustainable Event Centre/Location/Hotel, Sustainable Human Resources Management and Sustainable Company/Association.
