Leipzig is a place of learning and science

Famous institutions of education and scholarship
Leipzig’s excellence in science is based on a rich tradition. In 1409, ‘Alma Mater Lipsiensis’ was founded, Germany’s second oldest University. Leipzig University’s Medical Faculty which was founded in 1415 is Germany’s second oldest School of Medicine and today ranks among the country’s largest research facilities of its kind. The foundation of the municipal St. George Hospital dates back to 1212.

Leipzig enjoys a strong international reputation for outstanding achievements in fields like surgery, cardiology, transplantational medicine, paediatrics, neuroscience, sports medicine, gerontology and orthopaedics as well as in the domain of stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Highlights in terms of the latter fields are the Translational Centre for Regenerative Medicine, and the IZI Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology which was founded within BIO CITY LEIPZIG in 2005.

Be it the various Max Planck Institutes, institutes of the Fraunhofer Society, the Media Academy, the UFZ Centre for Environmental Research or BIO CITY LEIPZIG: all these facilities make a vital contribution towards shaping our future, and they offer valuable synergies for meetings and conferences.

A project unique throughout the world is Pongoland where scientists of the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology are onto the behaviour of apes, thus studying our own origins.

Other internationally renowned institutions of higher education are the HHL Graduate School of Management, the School of Business, Technology and Culture, or the School of Music and Theatre.
