Music and theatre in Leipzig
Broad repertoire of music from classical to modern
There are some outstanding musical pleasures on offer from the famous Gewandhaus Orchestra, under the direction of its eminent conductor, Andris Nelsons. 275 years old, the orchestra is the oldest civic symphony orchestra in the world. Every week, it also joins with the St. Thomas' Boys' Choir, which has been in existence for 800 years, to perform the cantatas in St. Thomas' Church. With its opera performances, musical comedy and ballet, the Leipzig Opera (Oper Leipzig) is an inviting place to be. Equally tempting, with its programme of classical concerts, is the Mendelssohn House. The Bach Festival, Leipziger Romantik or Klassik airleben are just as much of a draw for the public and are just as captivating as the International A Cappella Festival, the Leipzig Big Band, the Leipzig Jazz Days and the Wave-Gothic Festival.
Varied programme on Leipzig's stages
The inviting programmes of Leipzig's theatres cannot help but tempt us to sample their excellent performances. None more so than the long-standing Schauspiel Leipzig (Leipzig Playhouse). More informal entertainment is offered by numerous cabarets, variety and vaudeville stages and the alternative theatrical scene.
